Ministry Opportunities

At Capitol Hill, we strongly believe that the body of Christ is a tapestry woven together by our different cultures, gifts, and personalities. Our ministries are enriched because of our diverse community.

Children + Youth

SUNDAYS

Children are welcome in worship and are invited to participate in all aspects of worship as lectors, communion servers, acolytes and more. Our staffed nursery is available for children aged 6 weeks through 5 years and our Play and Pray area is open to all.

Kid’s Club, for Kindergarten - 5th grades, teaches about our Christ-centered faith through the stories and characters in the Bible. Kids learn about the structure and flow of both the Old and New Testaments. Classes end with music time.

For ages 2 through Preschool, SPROUTS is all about faith formation through play and stories. Each class features a short lesson and a craft with music time following.

Taught by Pastor Minna, youth in 6th - 8th grades attend Confirmation. This three-year program digs deeper into the difficult questions about faith and life and leads students toward Affirmation of Baptism. Each student is paired with an adult mentor to help support them on this journey of formation.

Worship + Music

WORSHIP

Worship is the heart of our life together as a community. From our ushers to communion servers, each role is integral to our worship life. Capitol Hill worship services utilize traditional liturgy settings and music. Our worship service in English is at 10:00 AM on Sundays.

NUER WORSHIP

Members of the South Sudanese community gather together to worship, sing and engage in fellowship in the Nuer language. Contact Gideon Paul for service information or for information on the South Sudanese Congregation.

VIETNAMESE BIBLE STUDY

Our Vietnamese community gathers weekly to engage in Bible Study and prayer. On the 1st Sunday of each month, we all worship together in English.

MUSIC

Music enhances our worship experience. Capitol Hill and our predecessor churches, First Lutheran and Central Lutheran, have rich histories of music as part of the identity of the congregation.

Music ministry at Capitol Hill includes our choir which provides monthly music offerings as well as our bell choir. Additional music may include classical guitar, piano, organ, and other solos and ensembles. The choir rehearses on Wednesdays at 6:00 PM in the Choir Room. Bell Choir rehearses on Wednesdays at 7pm. Contact Ben Hoskins to learn more.

WORSHIP ARTS

Our worship arts committee is responsible for creating the aesthetic for our worship services. It is through their co-creative work with the Holy Spirit that worship is filled with artistic elements..

Mission + Outreach

THE CLOTHES CLOSET

Capitol Hill hosts a clothing closet for members of the community. Our friendly and welcoming volunteers support this important ministry to the community on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

UBFM - URBAN BICYCLE FOOD MINISTRY

Each Thursday, Capitol Hill hosts volunteers from the congregation and the community to make burritos and other foods for homeless individuals in Des Moines. Cyclists then deliver these food items all year long. Volunteer to support this ministry in preparing or packing food.

SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE

Our social justice committee works to promote a christ-centered understanding of love and beneficence for all of God’s children. This committee works to advance the rights and support for immigrants and refugees, the LGBTQIA+ community, and the BIPOC community in addition to other marginalized people and groups we care called to care for as the Body of Christ.
